Mathematics graduate from Imperial joins Qomply
Technology Intern Programme at Qomply

This summer Larry Wang joined Qomply’s Technology Internship Programme. With a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Imperial College London, Larry discusses his coding background and his future career plans in coding and finance.
What made you choose Qomply?
I am happy to have had the opportunity of interning at Qomply. Initially, I discovered Qomply on the careers website of my university; its blend of finance and technology interested me immediately, as Fintech is one of my areas of interest and I'd love to discover more about the industry.
In addition, this internship provided me with the opportunity of enhancing my coding skills as well as expanding my knowledge in the regulatory sector. Having been at Qomply for almost a month now, I can gladly say that the experience has been thoroughly enjoyable and I can't wait to see what is up next.
When did you start coding and what is your coding background?
I first started coding during the 2020 Covid Lockdown. With school being suspended then, I had vast amounts of time to kill, which led me to decide to pick up coding as a hobby since I believed that it is a useful skill to have. However, I was not formally introduced to coding until I started university.
Throughout my studies, coding became more and more prevalent, as a large part of my degree involved solving mathematical problems computationally using programming languages such as Python and R. Now, it's safe to say that coding is a passion of mine and I hope to transfer the knowledge I've acquired so far into this internship and further studies.
What do you like the most about the internship?
My favourite part about the internship so far is that the experience feels very personalised. From coffee catch ups with Michelle, peer programming with Yi as well as team lunches at Pizza Pilgrims, there is a very strong sense of community at Qomply which I greatly appreciate.
On another note, I also enjoyed sitting in client meetings with Michelle. It really brings into perspective how businesses operate and also gives me a better understanding of Qomply's products and what they offer.
What does your future career path look like? Has this experience made you consider a career in FinTech?
In the future, I'd love to work in either the finance sector or the technology sector, as both fields provide an avenue for me to use the technical and quantitative skills which I've acquired throughout my studies and other experiences. My internship at Qomply has definitely helped me to see the importance of technology in the finance industry and deepened my interest to work in the sector.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy going to the gym and playing the piano. Both activities give me a sense of mindfulness - it helps me take off what's on my mind and clear out my headspace.
I find this extremely useful as sometimes, when tackling a difficult problem, it's very easy to get bogged down in the details and miss the bigger picture. I often find that I make more progress on a problem when I stop thinking about it for a while then come back to it than trying to see the end without taking breaks.
